Seeking Truth: My Daily Wisdom Check From Proverbs

2 min read

I've spent the last several months working through the book of Proverbs. It's a book of comparisons: do things one way and here's what you get; do them the other way and here's what you get.

Looking at my own life, it shows exactly where I went wrong and the decisions that led to the bad consequences. So I started building a wisdom check: something to look at every morning to set my day up right. It'll keep growing as I keep studying.

My morning wisdom check

  • Review the commandments until I know them by heart.

  • Pray, and seek God's help and wisdom.

  • Read a little of the Bible, then ponder and plan the day.

  • Use discernment: will what I do today please God?

  • Keep good company. Don't cast pearls before swine.

  • Use common sense when asked to do something that doesn't make sense.

  • Work hard. Proverbs says it over and over: don't be lazy.

  • Look after my body as well as my spirit. They work hand in hand.

  • Remember there are no shortcuts to success.

  • Build discipline and practise it.

  • Be humble, and stay teachable.

  • Life rewards action, not talk.

  • Don't follow traditions of man that go against my conscience.

  • Speak the truth and keep my name and reputation good.

Speaking the truth has been a hard one for me. Too often I've sugarcoated things to protect people's feelings. This year I'm working on telling it straight, and it gives me more peace of mind.

As I build more wisdom, I hope to share it with you. If I can help you in any way, that's the goal.
