Hunting season is upon us and trapping is just around the corner.

Living in North Central British Columbia, we’re lucky to experience four distinct seasons, each bringing its own adventures. As we bid farewell to summer, we’re excited to dive into hunting and trapping this year.

This summer was a wild ride. We had mostly rain until mid-August, then a major heatwave hit, turning the skies clear and blazing hot. A few wildfires sparked, casting a smoky haze, but the nighttime humidity has kept things in check. Now, with fall just around the corner, we’re ready for cooler weather and the thrill of the season ahead.

Today, September 10, marks the official opening of rifle season in our area. The heat has been intense, so I’m holding off on big game hunting until the temperatures cool down a bit—that’s just how we roll up here in the North. Yesterday, we went on a grouse hunt, spotting seven but only bagging one. The grouse seemed skittish, and with the leaves and brush still thick, tracking them was tough this time around.

My main focus for big game this season is moose, elk, and deer, with a possible late-season black bear if we spot a healthy, fat one. With the price of meat these days, I’m determined to fill the freezer with wild game. Beyond the hunt, I’m excited for quality family time, making memories, and sharing great stories at hunting camp.

The moose hunt is planned for September 25 to October 5, and we’re busy prepping equipment, securing licenses, and finalizing plans. The Elk rut is just around the corner, and I’ve heard some bugling already happening nearby. It’s shaping up to be an exciting season!

This year, I’m hoping to get my 83-year-old dad out hunting with us, possibly for his last hunt. It’s a special goal to share that time together in the field. I hope you’re all making your own plans and hitting the ground running this season. I can’t wait to hear about your adventures and share more of ours. See you all soon.
