A Grizzly Killed a Moose 100 Yards From Our Cabin

2 min read

A grizzly took down a moose in the water about 100 yards from our cabin, and Tanner and I came on it boating in.

The bear was exhausted. It stood over the kill, then rested on it, pulling at it, grooming, yawning and scratching in the water. A grizzly fattening up before hibernation doesn't get a better meal than that, and it wasn't going anywhere.

We got the footage up close, then made the call to leave. Spending the night at a cabin 100 yards from a grizzly guarding a fresh moose is how people get hurt, and no video is worth that.

The end of the video has bonus clips from other grizzly encounters in the area, plus recovering the moose head afterwards. Footage like this is rare, and it shows how much power is out there. Respect it.

Lessons from the kill site

  • A bear on a carcass will defend it. Give it all the room it wants and don't plan to stay nearby.

  • Watch from the water when you can. A boat gave us distance and an easy way out.

  • Know when to leave. We left the cabin rather than risk a night next to that bear.
